ArtPlay

ArtPlay is a children’s art space in Melbourne, Victoria. It is a place where families and children can be creative and express themselves in an open and supportive environment. Children up to the age of 13 create art alongside professional artists of all disciplines.
Pocketfool has been conducting monthly Sunday theatre workshops for preschoolers and their families at ArtPlay since 2008 and coordinates the weekly Friday preschool workshops there. The preschool program encompass all art forms and encourage artists to explore their creative practice in new ways through sharing and playing with young children and their families.

Pocketfool are members of the ArtPlay artist forum and contributing artists on the Backyard project. Jennifer is a research assistant on the Backyard project, which is part of “access”, an Australia Council research project at ArtPlay and Melbourne University.

Research
Since 2008 Pocketfool has been fortunate to be involved in a research project entitled, Mapping Engagement, Learning and Cultural Citizenship at ArtPlay. Led by the University of Melbourne, with support from the City of Melbourne and the Australia Council, this four year Australian Research Council project (2006-2010), has set out to map a diverse range of ArtPlay workshops and interpret how these are experienced by children, families, artists, teachers and arts workers. The aim of the study is to shed light on the phenomena of artists working with children in a dedicated community arts space (www.edfac.unimelb.edu.au/ace/research/artplay.html). As part of this study we collaborated with researchers who documented several of our workshops through observations, surveys and parent/carers interviews. Stemming from this involvement has been a greater awareness of participant responses to our workshops, and a more detailed critical awareness of our goals, processes and outcomes.
